Sloped backyards are one of those problems that just sits there. The yard looks unusable, erosion keeps creeping in, and there's no good way to fix it without a serious hardscape solution. That's exactly what we were dealing with on this one - a significant grade change that was eating up usable backyard space and leaving the homeowner with nothing but a hill to look at.
The solution here was a large segmental block retaining wall, and it's built to hold. We're talking multiple courses of heavy-duty block, stacked tight, running the full length of the yard's rear edge. The wall wraps with a clean curved corner on one end - that kind of detail isn't just aesthetic, it's structural. Curves in a retaining wall distribute lateral pressure more evenly, which matters a lot when you're holding back that much soil.
What the wall creates above it is the real payoff. Up top, there's a flat, fenced backyard with established turf - actual usable space. The black aluminum fencing runs the perimeter, giving the whole setup a finished, intentional look. Below the wall, the slope has been graded and seeded with straw laid over it to protect the seed and hold moisture during establishment. That's the lawn care side of this job, and it matters just as much as the wall itself. You can't just leave raw disturbed soil on a slope and hope for the best.
A retaining wall this size is a long-term investment. It stops erosion, defines the yard boundary, and creates a platform for everything that comes next - a patio, a play area, whatever the homeowner wants to do with the space. The hardscape does the heavy lifting so the lawn and landscaping above it can actually thrive.
